1RM prediction equations have been validated since the 1980s. The reference works:
- Brzycki, M. (1993) — Strength testing: predicting a one-rep max from reps-to-fatigue, JOPERD: introduces the most widely used formula for 1–10 reps.
- Epley, B. (1985) — Boyd Epley Workout: a linear formula that became standard in strength and conditioning.
- LeSuer, D. A. et al. (1997) — J Strength Cond Res: compares the equations on the bench, squat and deadlift; concludes that Epley and Brzycki are the most accurate.
- Reynolds, J. M. et al. (2006) — J Strength Cond Res: accuracy degrades markedly beyond 10 reps.
