FFMI of 22: what does it mean?
A normalized FFMI of 22 takes a man into the "very good" zone (22 to 23.5): well-developed muscle at fitness-model level. It is also the bottom of the 22-24 bracket where, per the Kouri et al. (1995) study cited on our calculator, most natural lifters eventually top out. For a woman, 22 corresponds to the generic female natural ceiling: the scale flips to "exceptional", near or beyond the natural reference limit — a rare level implying years of training and favourable genetics. For a man, the remaining margin to the generic ceiling of 25 is about 3 points, i.e. roughly 3 × height² (m²) kg of fat-free mass, earned ever more slowly.

Men
| Normalized FFMI | Level |
|---|---|
| < 17 | Below average |
| 17 – 20 | Average |
| 20 – 22 | Above average |
| 22 – 23.5← FFMI 22 | Very good |
| 23.5 – 25 | Excellent |
| ≥ 25 | Exceptional |
Women
| Normalized FFMI | Level |
|---|---|
| < 14 | Below average |
| 14 – 16 | Average |
| 16 – 18 | Above average |
| 18 – 20 | Very good |
| 20 – 22 | Excellent |
| ≥ 22← FFMI 22 | Exceptional |
Indicative scale for the normalized (height-corrected) FFMI. Reliability depends on the accuracy of your body fat %: a 4% error shifts the FFMI by about 0.6 point.
💬 FFMI 22 FAQ
Is an FFMI of 22 achievable naturally?
Yes, unambiguously: 22 opens the "very good" zone (22 to 23.5) of the male scale and sits within the 22-24 bracket where most natural lifters top out according to Kouri et al. (1995). It is a demanding level — years of structured training — but perfectly compatible with being natural.
Is an FFMI of 22 the limit for a woman?
It is the generic female natural ceiling our calculator uses: at 22, the female scale switches to "exceptional", near or beyond the natural reference limit. A few large-framed morphologies can have a slightly higher personalized ceiling (Casey Butt model), but that is statistically rare.
What is left to gain after FFMI 22 for a man?
About 3 points before the generic natural ceiling of 25, i.e. roughly 3 × height² (m²) kg of fat-free mass — on the order of 9 to 10 kg at 1.75-1.80 m. Progress there is slow: the "excellent" zone starts at 23.5 and the elite natural limit sits around 25-26 (Kouri et al., 1995).
